L’OM has struck out in their pursuit of an African player, according to French media reports.

So far, L’OM has faced challenges when it comes to their African targets. While negotiations with Algerian international Bachir Belloumi (Farense) have stalled, the club has now seen one of their main options slip away. According to Foot Mercato, Nigerian international midfielder Wilfred Ndidi (27 years, 58 caps) has agreed to a contract extension with Leicester City.

The duration of the new deal hasn't been specified, but it confirms that Ndidi will be staying with the Foxes for at least a seventh full season (having joined in winter 2017). This extension proves the confidence the King Power Stadium tenants have in him, especially after returning to the Premier League following a season in the Championship. Despite suffering an injury mid-season, the Lagos native remained indispensable for the 2016 Premier League champions, starting 26 out of the 32 league matches he participated in, scoring 4 goals and providing 5 assists. This brings his total to 273 appearances, netting 17 goals and making an equal number of assists with the promoted team.

Ndidi, the One That Got Away

The Super Eagle appeared to be the right fit for the Marseillais, given that he was out of contract and his profile was perfect for reinforcing a position where Central African Geoffrey Kondogbia showed several shortcomings last season. According to Foot Mercato, there were discussions, and Ndidi was reportedly open to exploring Ligue 1, showing interest in discovering a new environment.

The same source indicates that two other top L1 clubs, specifically OL and AS Monaco, were also in contact with the former Genk player. It is now clear that L’OM must look elsewhere in their search.

Why didn't Ndidi join OM? Ndidi decided to stay with Leicester City after negotiating a contract extension, confirming his commitment to the club for at least a seventh full season.

Were other clubs interested in Ndidi? Yes, apart from OM, other Ligue 1 giants such as OL and AS Monaco were also in contact with him.

It's evident that OM's pursuit of Wilfred Ndidi has come to an end with the Nigerian international opting to extend his stay at Leicester City. As clubs continue their quests for the right talent, OM must now shift focus and explore other potential signings to enhance their squad.
